Competition: Beyond the Pale
Create something, including ephemeral arts like food or live performance, which is documented to a specific historical border or cultural exchange. This could be something that shows the interaction of two cultures (for example, Norse influence on Irish dress or fusion cuisine) or an item found at a border (for example, an item found at Hadrian’s Wall). Lord Erasmus Taylor will be organizing the competition and has specifically encouraged artisans of all skill levels, including Laurels, to compete.
Entrants should drop off entries between 9–10 AM, to give judges time to review entries and provide feedback.
Erasmus is eager to answer any questions or facilitate specific needs; don’t hesitate to reach out!
Judging
Judges will score each entry against the category-specific Pennsic A&S War Point Rubric, with bonus points provided for the specificity of the historical borderline the artifact is documented to. A claim that an entered piece is “Anglo-Irish” will not score as many points as one persuasively documented to the year 208, dropped at the Antonine Wall in a skirmish between Roman colonists and the native Caledonians.
Open Display
In addition to the competition, space will be available for open display of work. Participants can indicate whether or not they’d like feedback from a judge.
If you’d like feedback from a judge, please drop off your display between 9–10 AM.
Crafter’s Green
Throughout the day, the Crafter’s Green will have stations for various art forms where visitors can learn more about the craft, see an artisan at work, and more.
Artisans can bring works in progress or demonstration materials to share their work and knowledge with others. A 6′ table will be provided for each artisan, but you should bring your own chair and tools. If you’re able to bring one, additional canopies are also appreciated.
Walk-up participation is encouraged, but filling out the Crafter’s Green Interest Form will ensure a space is ready for you.
During open crafting time, live instrumental music accompaniment will be provided. Interested musicians should reach out to Magister Ishmael Stedfast Reed to be put on the set list.
